Michael Bloomberg’s Emergency Candidacy

Former three-term New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg made it official over the weekend and is now going to seek the Democratic nomination for President of the United States. According to sources, he felt that the current crop of candidates were not prepared to defeat Donald Trump, a President that he views as an existential threat to America.

Trump’s signature accomplishments as President include the exacerbation of economic inequality via tax cuts and policies requiring more monetary stimulus from the Fed, the thwarting of any attempt at common sense gun regulation, a complete and total retreat from any effort toward facing the climate change threat and a disastrous trade war now heading into its third year with nothing to show for the dislocations and chaos it’s created throughout the manufacturing economy.

Michael Bloomberg is a Jewish billionaire from New York City and the most unlikely person to be able to win a national election since, well, since President Donald Trump was.

As unlikely as he may look on paper, keep in mind that he’s the 14th wealthiest person on earth and seems to be committed to doing what it takes to return the country back on a course of rational behavior, international leadership and competence in our federal institutions. Bloomberg’s candidacy rests on his being able to pull enough tax-paying families who are stuck in the middle of two extremes – who simply want a return to normalcy, a plan to restore order and civility to everyday life. It’s a bold bet, and one that Bloomberg is in a unique position to make.

Is the center big enough? Will it be energized sufficiently to come out for him and his centrist vision for the way forward?
