QOTD: An Optimistic Apocalypse

A near-unanimous fondness for end-of-the-world porn is one of the least attractive aesthetic impulses of today’s culture critics. But Nolan, who’s both the leading blockbuster filmmaker of his generation and the one least constrained by conventional liberal pieties, offers a magnificent twist: In “Interstellar” he suggests man is by his nature master of his environment, that the heroic actions of daring individuals can rewrite history and that our problems have technological solutions.
In other words:

This is an optimistic apocalypse flick.

Chris Nolan’s Interstellar is being hailed as a masterpiece by those who’ve seen it, and even the grouchiest critics are being to forced to admit its epic scale and the novelty of its premise. The above quote comes from the New York Post’s curmudgeonly film critic Kyle Smith, who doesn’t like anything – especially if other people do. Pay less attention to the political slant of Smith’s headline and more attention to the message he’s taken away from Nolan’s actual message.

I like the idea of an end-of-the-world movie that takes the approach that all is not lost so long as man plays his historic role in taming the elements with ingenuity and innovation. This is the perfect disaster film for our time.

The fourth and final trailer for Interstellar is below:
