Welcome to the first edition of Saturday Night Video this spring…
If you’re at all into indie rock, the new record Atlas by the NJ band Real Estate is probably in heavy rotation on your device this spring. It’s both a critics’ and fan favorite album, rather rare for the genre.
For the uninitiated, Real Estate is yet another Brooklyn-based band garnering positive reviews on Pitchfork and Consequence of Sound, but don’t hold that against them. The group originally hails from Ridgewood, New Jersey and follows in the best alt-rock traditions that state has to offer – the sort of blissed-out, gorgeous, nostalgic pop-rock that Fountains of Wayne and Pete Yorn were producing so reliably a decade ago.
And these are not rock stars, they are musicians. And thoughtful ones at that – “I’m just trying to make some sense of this. Before I lose another year.”
In the video below, they play their entire new album – in order, starting with the shimmering “Had to Hear” – for a live audience.
“Had to Hear”- 0:20
“Past Lives”- 5:15
“Talking Backwards”- 10:44
“April’s Song”- 14:18
“The Bend”- 19:35
“How Might I Live”- 29:00
“Beneath the Dunes” (Encore)- 47:10
