Cam'ron's "I Hate My Job" – The Hip Hop Recession Anthem

[vodpod id=Groupvideo.2728662&w=425&h=350&fv=]

The Hip Hop genre of music is known for many of it’s more negative idiosyncrasies, but one of it’s more positive aspects is how aspirational the artists are.  The top MCs in the game have historically been those who’ve emphasized their hustle.

Hip Hop music has basically become the official soundtrack for those who dream about getting money and moving up in the world.

In these tougher economic times, some of the genre’s artists have toned down the bling rhetoric or, at least, have made concessions to the fact that their fan base now contains many who are struggling and do not necessarily wish to be bombarded with lyrics about private jets and iced-out chains.

Down-south rapper Young Jeezy dropped his album The Recession on September 2nd, 2008 – concurrent with the Lehman bankruptcy-led global meltdown.  This was one of the first instances of a successful rapper “keeping it real” and owning up to the fact that the Crystal was not exactly flowing as much as it used to be.

Unfortunately, he followed up after the election with a new track explaining that although Jeezy’s president is black, his Lamborghini happens to be blue.  Back to the braggadocio rather quickly.

The latest MC to tackle the recession is Harlem legend Cam’ron of the Dip Set crew with “I Hate My Job” off his new album Crime Pays.  Cam claims only to have ever worked a real job for about 5 days of his life, although he certainly captures what it’s like to be stuck in one.

Cam’ron is a Giant in the Mental, and this track is up to par with some of his best work over the last decade.

“I Hate My Job” is the new Recession Anthem, download it and hope we never hear a hip hop track about Green Shoots!
