Decency is Underrated

I think people want decency back. I think there’s enough fatigue from the constant and unceasing Culture Wars that decency could be an underrated factor in November.

There’s no fatigue in the media or on Twitter – the people who are extremely online love the warfare because it gives them an identity, like being a super fan of an NFL team. But that’s a small slice of the population, it’s far from everyone. Only 22% of US adults are on Twitter and many of them are only on it to consume breaking news or follow a celebrity they like.

I think the majority of people are sick of the division and the cheap shots and the ugliness.

I was struck by the concession speech Amy Klobuchar gave last night as she threw her support behind Joe Biden in the crucial hours before Super Tuesday. I think she gets this. If more people like Amy Klobuchar went to Washington and were in positions of political power, we’d have more trust and faith in the government. We’d have more compromise and less anger.

I’m not talking about her political opinions or policy ideas at all. I’m talking about her character, her demeanor and, yes, her fundamental decency.
