Super Saturday Storm, Billions on the Line for Retailers

Today is what’s known as Super Saturday, the day when your friends who weren’t going to buy you anything for Christmas wake up in the morning, feel guilty and rush out to grab you a last minute gift.

According to the Wall Street Journal, this is a big day for retailers with about $15 billion changing hands on Super Saturday each year.

This year, the east coast has been slammed with a snowstorm that has closed malls, stores and roads up and down the coast.  In Virginia, they’ve declared a state of emergency and New York is bracing for the storm to hit later this afternoon.  I got caught in it myself this morning on the Garden State Parkway…believe me, no one who doesn’t have to will be getting on the roads today, especially to go shopping.

With the Northeast representing about a quarter of Super Saturday’s national $15 billion, retailers could be feeling shivers of their own, especially those for whom this Christmas was a make-or-break season.
