Fortune Magazine made a list of the best business podcasts, soliciting reader feedback as part of their effort, and I’m proud to say that both of the podcasts put out on a regular basis by my firm recieved a nod.
Barry Ritholtz’s Masters In Business is undeniably the very best long form interview series in all of finance. He’s had everyone by now that you could think of, and his interviewing skills get better and better. Barry asks people about their careers, their relationships and the really big insights and lessons they’ve accumulated over the years – not “What’s the Fed going to do?” or “What’s your favorite tech stock?”
MIB filled a major void in the media when it came along – Barry always asked rhetorically, “Why can’t they just get great guests to ask them questions about evergreen topics – and then just get out of the way?” Now he’s the one doing the asking, on Bloomberg Radio!
Michael Batnick and Ben Carlson had a sort of daily phone conversation (okay, thrice daily) where they’d catch up with each other on everything they were reading and seeing. Ben’s in Michigan and Michael shares an office with me in New York City, but we’re all tethered together through email, Slack and Twitter. On these calls I would only hear Michael’s side of the conversation, but there was a lot of laughter and tons of interesting chatter about market moves, books, blog posts, data, charts, etc. And then one day they decided to just record the call – and Animal Spirits was born!
Everywhere I go, people – usually young advisors and traders – ask me about Animal Spirits. “How are those guys so smart? Why is Mike so mean when Ben tries to make a joke? How much time do they spend preparing each week?” I always tell them what they’re hearing is literally the way these guys are in real life. And the prep routine is their day job – researching, observing, calculating, managing portfolios and writing for our clients! Sure, they work off a Google doc to keep track of each episode’s topics, but if you took it away, I doubt the show would be much different.
Anyway, I’m really proud of my colleagues for putting out two of the most helpful, interesting and informative business podcasts in the world. If you’re not subscribed to them already, you’re in luck – there’s already an amazing library of conversations and interviews to catch up on!
