Dr. Pearlman’s Opus

A million years ago (okay, 2009), your favorite financial blogger was toiling away in obscurity on a WordPress blog in the middle of nowhere with only a handful of daily hardcore readers and virtually zero inbound links or recognition from anywhere else.

There were big blogs like Barry Ritholtz’s The Big Picture. Yves Smith’s Naked Capitalism and Bess Levin’s Dealbreaker. And there there was this bizarre little blog called The Reformed Broker that almost no one had heard of.

Until I got an email out of the blue from some dude named Phil, seen below:

I saved that email because it changed my life.

Phil Pearlman called me to say that what I was writing was potent, it was affecting people and entertaining them and even teaching them. He asked me to join the StockTwits blog network and I immediately said yes. It was my introduction into the earliest trader social media community (we invented financial Twitter) and the beginning of a journey that would lead to tens of millions of page views, tens of thousands of followers and subscribers, a TV career, a book deal, guest writing gigs with the world’s most prestigious media companies and the eventual founding of my own investment advisory practice.

All of this came from one guy discovering my talent and believing in me, promoting my work until he was blue in the face.

Ever since I had met him, Phil’s singular burning professional desire was to create a network of smart financial writers who would be both interesting and helpful for readers. He wanted to put something epic together to counteract all the sleaze and cheese and spam that investors are daily assaulted with. He wanted to assemble the greatest group of market participant-bloggers of all time and to build a site around all of the best that the financial web has to offer.

And finally, after years of trying and working and hustling and organizing and planning, he’s done it. Not only that – he’s done it at Yahoo Finance, the largest and most heavily-trafficked central hub for financial news in the world. It’s an amazing achievement, something that no on else who’s attempted it has been able to pull off (and many have tried).

This is Phil’s opus. I’ve watched him struggle and fight to get it done, and now it’s actually here.

So congratulations to you, Phil, and to all of the amazing contributors you’ve lined up. It’s an honor to be a part of the Yahoo Contributor’s Network and a pleasure to be your friend.
