There are the amateurish and deserted blogs that used to be where families posted vacation photos or where college kids made lists of “awesome movies to take bong rips to”. And then there are professional blogs, like this one, that are maintained on a regular basis and used by those seeking information and informed opinion.
The New York Times did a piece last night about how blogging is being replaced by Facebook and Twitter – but they are referring to the first type blogging I mentioned, the kind that no one will miss anyway…
Blogs were once the outlet of choice for people who wanted to express themselves online. But with the rise of sites like Facebook and Twitter, they are losing their allure for many people — particularly the younger generation…
Former bloggers said they were too busy to write lengthy posts and were uninspired by a lack of readers. Others said they had no interest in creating a blog because social networking did a good enough job keeping them in touch with friends and family.
As much as it might be a fun brain teaser, I don’t think the majority of you want to attempt to decipher a post I’ve condensed to 140 characters on Twitter. Some blogs, like Business Insider, could go all Twitter at this point. Some of the titles of their posts are longer than the posts themselves after all and the charts can be attached via yfrog.
But most blogs need to stay blogs, Twitter will always be too short to make a nuanced, meaningful point. As far as real blogs migrating to Facebook, well, no they aren’t. Why would anyone want to create real, written content for Zuckerberg?
