A brand new book came out yesterday that I’m bursting to tell you about.
If the financial blogosphere were to disappear tomorrow and this book were the only chronicle of all the work we’d done, all of the anomalies we’ve uncovered, all the topics we’ve rampaged through, I guess I’d be okay with that.
My colleagues and I, furiously writing our blogs every day in an attempt to become better investors and to reveal the major truths from all of the noise. Linking back and forth to each other, sometimes in agreement and sometimes in dissent. Takes on takes on takes. Distillations and extrapolations. Endless perspective and context. Remixes and reductions, posted without pause. Personal stories interwoven with data, anecdotes punctuated by facts. Puns and prose, charts and charm.
This book, created and curated by the estimable Meb Faber, takes the best thing that each of us has written and turns it into a chapter. My chapter, Everyone is a Closet Technician – I had to re-read it before signing off with the publishing company – it’s probably the best thing I had ever done here. I’m really proud of it. All of the contributors ought to be proud of what they’ve contributed for the book, this stuff is fucking timeless. It’s definitive.
The gang’s all here – Ben and Barry, Nadig, Gray, Kitces, Bilello, Clements, Roche, Swedroe, Hoffstein, Damodaran, Fisher, Zweig, Housel, O’Shaughnessy – you know the names, they’ve been making you smarter for years, every week. You’ll discover their very best posts, and the work of some investment writers you’ve surely missed. You can’t miss this book. And when someone asks you what they should read to become a more knowledgable investor, from now on this is what you want to give them.
And the topics! Strategies, edges, market conditions, returns, risk, valuation, behavior, wealth-building, personal finance, stocks, bonds, commodities, hedge funds, alpha, beta, economics, trading, biases, time frames, performance measurement, liquidity, interest rates, micro and macro, it’s all here. You’ll get an elemental bit of truth on each and the starting point for further exploration.
I don’t know what more you could want out of a single book. The Best Investment Writing has it all. I really appreciate Meb putting this together. I hope he sells a million copies. And that’s because I hope a million copies get read by people who want to improve their skills and build their wisdom. There are lessons in here that have taken people their entire careers to accumulate.
I have two copies already. One I’ll keep and one I’ll give away to a young man or woman who wants to learn. You should probably have some copies too.
