Did IBM’s Watson nail my personality?

Wall Street Ranter did a blog post where he fed a post of mine into IBM’s Watson for a personality analysis. He did one for Barry and Bill McBride and Jesse Livermore too, so I was in good company.

Anyway, here’s what Watson spit out about me, based on a recent post I wrote:

“You are inner-directed and skeptical.

You are empathetic: you feel what others feel and are compassionate towards them. You are calm-seeking: you prefer activities that are quiet, calm, and safe. And you are independent: you have a strong desire to have time to yourself.

Your choices are driven by a desire for belongingness.

You are relatively unconcerned with tradition: you care more about making your own path than following what others have done. You consider helping others to guide a large part of what you do: you think it is important to take care of the people around you.”

If my blog were to disappear forever tomorrow, and this was the way in which I was remembered, I think I’d be perfectly fine with that. But is this really an accurate assessment? I’m asking rhetorically, because I can’t tell if the machine is just being nice or if this one post I did is truly emblematic of my entire oeuvre.

If Watson did totally nail me (along with the other bloggers), the implication for how important human emotional intelligence will be in the future is quite dire. If machines are already capable of sizing people up, then…
