The Riskalyze Report: Advisors Add the Permanent Portfolio

My friends at Riskalyze share the stocks and funds that advisors all over the country have used in their clients’ accounts each week. This data has been aggregated from across the client accounts of the thousands of advisors who use the software. Most of it comes directly through the third-party custodians where advisors’ assets are held. I hope we can uncover interesting trends for you each week…

Riskalyze

Week of November 16th – November 21st 2014:

Winners = top investments purchased by advisors for client portfolios that week
Losers = investments that advisors sold out of in client portfolios that week

Winners (advisor flows TO these investments increased):

  • First Eagle Global (SGENX)
  • Apple (AAPL)
  • Permanent Portfolio (PRPFX)

Losers (advisor flows FROM these investments increased):

  • Small Caps (IJR, IWN, VB)
  • Short (inverse) US Government Treasuries (TBT, TBF)
  • Pimco Funds (outright selling and exchanging among Pimco funds)

Josh here – last week motivational speaker extraordinaire Anthony Roberts burst on the financial media scene to promote his new book, Seven Simple Rules for Becoming Paul Tudor Dalio or something, I’m not sure, wasn’t really paying attention. But I didn manage to catch the part about his “Permanent Portfolio”, which actually sounds just like asset allocation except its way heavier on bonds than anyone should actually be in real life, unless they plan to die next week.

Bu that didn’t stop advisors from getting curious about the strategy and, as you can see, the Permanent Portfolio mutual fund made it into this week’s top ten most purchased assets among the thousands of advisors who use Riskalyze. Interesting to see Apple common stock pop up in there as well – almost as a just in case!

Anyway, Robbins is a good guy and he’s the real thing – my friend Jeff Macke did a Yahoo Finance segment with him and afterwards Robbins donated 50,000 meals to a charity in Jeff’s name. Pretty alpha move, I like it.

A word about Riskalyze:

In my practice, we use Riskalyze software tools to help assess clients’ true risk tolerance and to test portfolio configurations that match up accordingly. It’s changed our practice for the better, as I explain here.
