How Big is the Movie Market in Asia?

Don’t be surprised if Hollywood studios start producing films with actors speaking Mandarin or Korean and the subtitles in English. Because opening a film big in Asia is the meal ticket now. Enough so that a piece of excrement like Transformers 4: The Death of Shia’s Character can gross a billion dollars in four weeks.

TMZ caught one of the film’s producers on the street and riffed on the phenomenon:

As it is, Hollywood has been changing the endings of its movies to placate the Chinese authorities and in some cases they’ve changed entire plot lines – and I’m talking about for giant films like Iron Man 3 and World War Z (details here and here).

Not that blockbusters are a form of high art to begin with, but the idea of going to see movies being made with the strictures of Beijing’s review board in mind is a major turn-off to me, even if I don’t notice the fingerprints or the stitches in the seams.
