Here’s today’s Political Truism: Leadership means making enemies and pissing people off – Saying no to everyone’s pet projects to save the state.
Governor Chris Christie has just climbed above the 50% approval mark among New Jersey voters, despite the fact that half the state is calling him a “prick”. When he came into this game he told the voters that he was happy to be a one-term governor as long as he could do what his predecessor Jon Corzine was too afraid to – cut spending and stop the entitlement insanity.
New Jersey residents, who are paying some of the highest taxes in the US, may not have liked every chop Christie’s been forced to make but they sure know courage and pragmatism when they see it…
From the New York Post:
“Overall, the public has never been particularly happy with the size of the cuts Governor Christie has made in either of his budgets. However, they recognize New Jersey is in dire economic straits and continue to give the governor positive marks for leadership,” said Monmouth polling director Patrick Murray.
A Christie nomination for the GOP Presidential candidate (not that he’s running) would represent the ultimate referendum on public unions in the United States…the teachers would come out in force against him nationwide but it would be interesting to see how the independents would vote on the subject.
