Marvin Gaye would’ve been celebrating his 72nd birthday today.
Marvin was a pop music superstar throughout the late 60’s, giving Berry Gordy’s Motown Records a predictable stream of upbeat hit songs. But by 1970, Gordy had watched his singing partner Tammi Terrell, who collapsed from a brain tumor onstage, pass away. He was also fighting a tax battle against the IRS and had just seen his only brother go off to the Vietnam War.
In that frame of mind, Gaye penned What’s Going On, the song that would become his most soulful and important work After the video, visit Mental Floss (link below) for an all-emcompassing look at the song, the album and what went into its creation.
Happy Birthday, Marvin.
