The Riskalyze Report: Advisors Buy the Small Cap Rally

At the request of so many investment advisors, my friends at Riskalyze share the big trends in the assets going into and coming out of advisor portfolios every week. The underlying data is aggregated from hundreds of thousands of client accounts across the $44 billion and counting that advisors manage on the Riskalyze platform*. I hope we can uncover interesting trends for you each week…

Riskalyze

March 7th – 14th 2015

Winners (advisor flows TO these investments increased substantially):
  1. Small Caps (VBR, IWM)
  2. Real Estate (VNQI, VNQ, IYR)
  3. Mid-Caps (VO)

Losers (advisor flows FROM these investments increased substantially):

  1. Templeton Global Bond (TGBAX, TPINX)
  2. Technology (AAPL, MSFT, INTC)
  3. Permanent Portfolio (PRPFX)

Josh here – this weekend we spotlit the breakout in Russell 2000 small cap stocks. It appears that the move higher this year and outperformance versus large caps has gained adherents among the advisor community. As I am now fond of saying, Price Creates Opinion. Read more about it here.

In the “loser’s column”, more bond funds for sale. In addition, the Permanent Portfolio has hit the list for the first time. Considering the fund has performed miserably over the last three years, barely breaking even, and is 60% allocated to the two things you don’t want if rates rise (gold and bonds), this is not a surprise. The portfolio may be permanent but the enthusiasm of the investor class never is.

A word about Riskalyze:

In my practice, we use Riskalyze software tools to help assess clients’ true risk tolerance and to test portfolio configurations that match up accordingly. It’s changed our practice for the better, as I explain here.
