Forget the Dollar, Influence is the New Global Currency

OK, that title was designed to elicit a jeering response, I’m not a social media guru and people who know me know that I don’t walk around making pronouncements like that.

But what if Influence does indeed become more important as a currency of sorts?  Are you ready for that?  Am I? Is there any way to even get ready for something like that?  With global influence, at least as it pertains to a specific segment, couldn’t you get paid in whatever currency you want to?  Is the future one in which people have different hold times awaiting customer service based on how important their opinion is?

I watched my friend The Fly trash State Farm over them not treating him right as a customer.  State Farm responded to his tweets in front of all of us.  Did they check his follower count first?

I don’t have the answers even though Chris Selland originally got me thinking about this stuff in February.  But I do have one concrete step you could take if you want to start laying the foundation.  You could sign up at Klout and start tracking your social media influence.

I did the other day and then they just pinged me that the new version is live.  It’s kind of cool to see what my “vitals” look like when displayed this way.  Check it out below and then hit the link to sign up for your own.
